First and foremost, self-representation is about developing a relationship with the clients who buy my art. Never forget this or take it for granted.  I am finding that more often than not, clients want to know the artist they are buying from.  They want more than just a good painting. Meeting the artist lets them know the story and person behind the work and that is what drives the self-represented sale. Over time, clients become close and trusted friends. They help push me to be better as an artist, father, husband, and friend.

But, let me make it clear, I have nothing against galleries. I just knew that at the time I pulled all my work from galleries that I could do better selling the work myself. When I was in as many as 7 galleries, I always found that my sales would peak directly around the time I would attend an opening, do a demo, or just stop in for a visit and speak with the owner and any clients who stopped by. On a few occasions, I even sold the work off the gallery wall to the client.

Also, over the course of the next couple of years, I even hope to go back to being largely represented by galleries. Yes, my work would get more expensive, but demand is taking it that way anyway.  It would have to be the right offer. One where I was welcome to meet clients, have a lot of demos, and work hand in hand with the gallery. But, time will tell. Until then, I hope to see you at the next show or welcome you to my Gallery and Studio in Newcastle, Maine.
